you know who else told sansa he could be good to her and would never hurt her?
motherfucking joffrey baratheon
all y’all haters keep telling sansa that she needed to learn a lesson.
well she fucking did so shut your fucking mouths sansa stark doesn’t own tyrion lannister shit.
S1 Sansa would have been less than psyched about marrying Tyrion (like she was less than psyched but marrying Willas) but its the lessons the Lannisters/the court at large have taught her
everyone lies
the only reason people bother with her is her title
promises of her safety mean nothing
that make her so miserable about the idea of marrying Tyrion now.
And really… Tyrion might be the least corrupt/morally questionable Lannister (not that that’s saying a lot), and yes, readers and viewers can tell he’s not a Joffrey, but remember that Tyrion goes around dressing in red and gold, wearing those obnoxious lion rings, flashing his money and buying people’s loyalty and asking how high every time Tywin says jump and generally waving the “GO TEAM LANNISTER” banner. And he does it because he’s trying to compensate for being what Tywin calls “the least of the Lannisters” but Sansa doesn’t know that.

“When Sansa turned, the little man was gazing up at her, his mouth tight, his face as red as her cloak. Suddenly she was ashamed of her stubbornness. She smoothed her skirts and knelt in front of him, so their heads were on the same level.”
No, she doesn’t kneel right away; yes, it’s important that she doesn’t, and it’s highly problematic that the show changed it. But stop screaming that “Sansa Stark doesn’t kneel for anyone,” guys. She doesn’t kneel for House Lannister; she does kneel for Tyrion, if only out of pity.
The whole kneeling thing is about the oppression that both of them face, although in different ways. Remember what Sansa thinks when she refuses to kneel? “Why should I care about his feelings, when no one cares about mine?” And then everyone is laughing at Tyrion. Because haha the dwarf can’t reach his bride’s shoulders, in this wedding that he didn’t choose, that neither of them chose. And then Sansa realizes that no one thought to bring Tyrion a stool. Because even the Lannisters don’t care about Tyrion. Because this wedding isn’t about Tyrion, it’s about politics. No one cares about Sansa’s humiliation, or about Tyrion’s. In fact they’re more than willing to laugh at them. That’s why she kneels in the book, and it doesn’t make her initial refusal less powerful, but it does say something about Sansa’s ability to have compassion for someone even though she has it worse. She doesn’t kneel because she owes Tyrion anything. She kneels because this isn’t right for either of them.

Okay, the thing is, I watch this episode, and I think of the way Tyrion finds it laughable that he could be anyone’s dream husband. That anyone could want him at all. That there’s anything to desire about him.
And I think of the way Tywin looms over him at the reception, an imposing and physical force, and of the way Tyrion knows what his father is capable of when he tells Tyrion he will sleep with this girl. Of how Tyrion hears the threat where Tywin doesn’t even have to give voice to one because he’s so imtimately familiar with it. And especially I think of the way Tywin mocks his son for his issues with sex and drinking when TYWIN IS THE ONE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE TRAUMAS AT THE ROOT OF THESE ISSUES IN THE FIRST PLACE.
And then I just think of how the only route of dealing with this abuse/humiliation (and the painful, damaging memories implicit in Tywin’s order to sleep with another scared, young girl) that Tywin leaves his son is for him to get so drunk he embarrasses himself. (Which we’ve never seen Tyrion do before, for as much as he talks about it. It’s Tyrion’s wit he prides himself on - surely he doesn’t make a habit of drinking himself into a babbling mess. Tyrion hates being embarrassed, remember?)
And then not only the entire wedding party, but this whole damn fandom - like him or hate him - raves about how funny Tyrion’s drunkenness in the reception scene was when it was just really damn tragic. Because watching someone lower themselves like that is never funny and argh, that’s pretty much Tyrion playing into the persona they - and Tywin most of all - have assigned to him. The drunken, lecherous dwarf.
ahahahaha and finally I think of how Tyrion can’t even be surprised that Sansa would never want to sleep with him because WHO WOULD? and how he finally passes out alone on the fucking floor. And it’s so pathetic, god I hate it when Tyrion’s pathetic.
So no, no anger toward Tyrion here. Just a profound sadness for someone stripped of what is truly Tyrion’s armor - his words and wit and his illusion that none of it matters.

if you’re a lannister fan who doesn’t like tyrion or appreciate his narrative i don’t trust you
#its incredibly telling that you stan beautiful gilded fools and completely put their disabled and conventionally unattractive brother on the backburner #that you love tywin and his narrative nevermind his avarice and abuse but turn away from tyrion in disgust #that you love the amorality of the lannisters but dgaf for tyrion’s moral dilemma and how he strives to be moral and better but ultimately fails #its not just telling in an isolated interpretation but it parallels the ableism that tyrion’s family wields against him #the fact that you enjoy the others but abhor him

I wish there was a law that anyone who says “Robb and Cat” will now have to say “Cat and Robb”.
(I also wish people would realize that as much as it hurts when fandom shits on your fave character, it feels fifty times worse when it’s the writers and creators themselves shit on said character. And that when it comes to GoT the writers themselves have shat on some characters way more than others and that’s why some people are crankier than others and if yours have been relatively spared or even gifted then realize you have something to enjoy that others don’t and maybe that can offer some perspective.)
